If you're much of a tech geek, you probably have at least heard of the "browser war" between Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Mozilla's Firefox. For years, Microsoft Internet Explorer has had a near monopoly on the browser market. Sure, they had a little competition from Netscape, but not much. That has all changed with Firefox. Mozilla's Firefox has put a large dent in the IE market share.
But why? What makes Firefox attractive? As a Firefox user, I think I can tell you. I can at least tell you what attracts me to Firefox.
Tabbed Browsing. This feature is a huge plus to me. As an Internet marketer, I can do some heavy duty web browsing. It's a lot easier to have 25 tabs open that 25 windows.
Search Features. Firefox has that cool search bar in the upper right hand corner. With the click of a button, I can search using any one of many search engines. This is another feature that is very attractive to Internet marketers.
Extensions. Firefox add-ons are a lot easier to come by that IE add ons, probably because Firefox is completely open source. Sure, there are plenty of IE toolbars, but there are tons of Firefox tools, that can do all kinds of cool stuff.
Skins. I don't really care too much about this feature, but you can customize your Firefox browser with a cool design - for free.
Security. Last but not least, Microsoft Internet Explorer has been exploited many, many times by various security threats. Mozilla's Firefox is less susceptible to security breaches, so many people use Firefox to stay secure on the net.
These are just the major benefits that Firefox offers. Interestingly enough, Microsoft is trying to add many of these features to their IE 7. If the sincerest form of flattery is imitation, Microsoft itself admits that Firefox is great!

Firefox Reached 400 Million Target

The Firefox power is growing strong since its launch date in 2004, with an increase from 100 Million to 200 Million 2 years later. It managed to doubled popularity in 2007 reaching 400 Million last week.
It's important to say that these 400 Million downloads do not represent the number of people who use the increasingly popular Internet browser. The number also includes updates or people who have re-installed Firefox. However there is no time to rest as it does not mean that every user who has downloaded the software is actively using it.
Firefox is gaining more and more market shares from Microsoft (Internet Explorer) and has reached around 18% according to W3Counter, this is a loss of about 9% for Internet Explorer.

Firefox: Benefit Analysis versus Internet Explorer

Most of Firefox's advantages are MSIE's disadvantages, and vice-versa. This article will look at some of the advantages and disadvantages of Firefox in relation to MSIE.

Security is often cited as the primary reason for users switching from MSIE to Firefox. Security is of utmost importance for software that interacts with remote computers, in an era of high security risk activities such as online banking.
Firefox has fewer security holes and a tighter schedule of disclosing them. The enhanced security in Firefox is due to a multitude of factors the system's inclusion of more source code reviewers and a better bug reporting system and exclusion of VBScript/ActiveX, often the source of vulnerabilities.
Meanwhile, Microsoft has been clamoring for years to try to clamp down on the MSIE security holes. It acquired an anti-spyware product, which it released under the banner of Microsoft AntiSpyware. It also promises its new Windows Vista platform will be more secure. However, Microsoft's track record to date has done little to boost the confidence of today's user. Standards compliance
Firefox has vaulted ahead of MSIE with improved support for standard web protocols, such as its superior stylesheet compatibility.
Since MSIE had a leading marketshare, the company had less interest in conforming to web standards, and instead focused on proprietary protocols, with the goal of maintaining their market position. That is, the focus of Microsoft was to try to convert as much of its userbase to writing webpages and web applications that required a proprietary MSIE-approach, so that down the road, users would be less able to move off a Microsoft platform. As a result, Microsoft neglected for years to improve support for basic open standards. For example, transparent PNG graphics did not work all the way through to MSIE version 6.
Multiple operating system platforms
Firefox is available for users who runs Windows (Windows 98 through to Windows XP), Mac OS X, all the leading versions of Linux, as well as some lesser-used operating systems. In comparison, Microsoft has dropped development for Mac, and other non-Windows systems. Furthermore, Microsoft has ceased new development even on their own versions of Windows, making the new MSIE only available to users who have a license for Windows XP. Firefox also has a similar user interface among the different operating platforms. For deployments that have a mix of operating platforms (such as Linux for the techs, Macs for the graphic designers, and Windows for the accounts department), moving to Firefox for everyone thus brings technical support costs down.
Time-saving browser innovations
Internet communication and interaction is a core component for most modern businesses. Efficient use of web browser time translates to increased profits, so innovations to help workers do their tasks faster are welcomed. Firefox leads MSIE in this regard, with out-of-the-box features such as integrated Google search in the toolbar, placing the find-within-page box at the bottom of the browser window so as not to obscure the text, and so on.

Any switch of software incurs a retraining cost. However, a switch from MSIE to Firefox requires only a mild amount of retraining.

Anyone who has or wants a web business spends a LOT of time on the web. Although it’s important to test your site in all the major browsers, choosing the best web browser to do your day to day business on the web is very important. I have a list a mile long of the things I hate about Internet Explorer. Let me get one thing straight from the start, I have nothing against Microsoft. But in my opinion, the best web browser is Firefox.
I was basically forced into using Firefox one day. I was no longer able to log on to any secure sites with my user name and password in Internet Explorer. I had read before that the best web browser was Firefox. So I downloaded its small install file and installed it. I chose to include the Google tool bar in the install since I always like to view the page rank of all the pages I visit. After using it for a day, I agreed it was probably the best web browser.

Not only did it solve my logon problem, I found it to be much more reliable in other ways. On one of the computers I use, Internet Explorer had a memory leak. I had to constantly reboot it before I started using Firefox as the browser. I was even more convinced than ever Firefox was the best web browser!
Something else I discovered about Firefox was that it was much better at remembering my user names and passwords. Internet Explorer was hit and miss in this area for me. Firefox saves me a lot of time the way it inputs my user information for me.
